Painting the undersides of stairs

There’s this scene toward the end of some after-school special I saw sometime in the 80’s where the main dude is painting some steps in front of a house and a father-figure person tells the main dude that he’s really going to make a name for himself and be successful because he’s painting the underside of the steps. Something about attention to detail and painting a part of the steps that no one will see, but the main dude will always know he painted them anyway.

I always think of this scene when I’m painting something (like I was this weekend) and I always paint the underside of whatever it is even if no one will see it. Apparently after-school specials have shaped my view of doing a complete job.
